Yes, it was the house right across the street, so they were facing each other and on the corner. It was my childhood home so it wasn't ever scary for me, but there were definitley a lot of things that happened there. Things floating, seeing people, hearing voices. I've never had the experiences I had there in any other home or place. My mom said one night (i was probably 5) I came into her room and told her an old woman was sitting on my bed. I didn't even remember that. Would be interesting to know if anyone else who has lived there has had any experience.

Okay...I have been lurking and have been sitting on my hands and biting my tongue long enough, that I decided to make a post. I first visited the mansion in 2001 for the summer with my Aunt. She was remodeling and adding a porch to the side entrance door, don't know if it's still there though. Now... all the whacky stories I have heard/read of the place I just can't help but roll my eyes at. I was in the house for more than 2 months, nothing really happened. Sorry to all you believers. You may have your experiences and what-not, but I can't help but laugh and think...sheesh, it's all mental. If you think the place is haunted, most likely if you visit you're going to come out with some "ghost story" or what you think you experienced. I'm a full blown skeptic and I have a right to voice my opinion. Go and spend 2 months in the house and you will really see the structure for it's beauty and not it's so called "spooky history." edited to add: It was a horrible experience really...We had many people come to the windows at night and peek in to see if anyone lived there. PRIVACY was never given...it's a darn shame.

When I was in 7th grade...gosh that was a long time ago, I am 26 now, my mom was in beauty school there in Valpo Indiana. Her best friend at the time, went by the name of Crosby, that was her last name went to school with her. Crosby and her family lived IN the Wolfe Mansion. Crosby's husband was a dr. Every year they had a huge 4th of July party, and my mother took me along. I toured the house. I heard the stories. The house was built on top of underground tunnels. I saw the cemented over doors myself. The basement reminded me somewhat of the Ammityville hooror. Crosby took us up to the bell tower, which yes, there is no more bell. Crosby turned it into her own little hideaway. She had pillows and books up there and a small light. SHe told us, before they bought the house they researched it. It was used back in the day to harbor slaves. A gentalman owned it long ago and killed some of his slaves and of course some of the slaves died as well from malnutrition. Those slaves are said to haunt the mansion today. She also said in the mid 50's or 60's Wolfe Mansion was used as a bridal shoppe. We later moved away a year later to Hawaii when my stepfather got orders from the Military to move us with him. They lost contact as friends. Imnot sure if the family still lives there.
The house was beautiful inside and out. But VERY creepy. I got chills when I was in the basement. Crosy always told my mother she knows the mansion was haunted but she fell in love with the house and couldnt pass it up.

I personally experienced several strange incidents at The Wolf. Back in 1979 Wolf Mansion was a Bridal/Flower Shop. Several businesses had set up shop in the mansion - all wedding related. My sister and my sister-in-law both purchased their bridesmaids dresses at the bridal shop. I went to several fitting at the shop and three times I fell down the front steps. After the second fall , one of the shop owner's husband checked the steps for structural damage, but could find no damage of worn spots on the wooden steps. (I could usually mange walking down the stairs pretty well, and I was puzzled by my clumsiness.) After my third fitting, I walked towards the steps, but I felt that someone was beside me. As I began to decend the steps, I purposely slowed my pace and looked down at the step only to see the small booted foot near my ankle. I stopped and looked to my left and caught a glimps of a small figure. When I turned to look, it was gone. I have no idea what it was, but my sister-in-law, her maid of honor, and my sister all fell down the front steps in roughly the same spot. We laughed it off at the time, but it always bothered me.

As a resident of Portage Indiana I can verify that people do live at the Wolf mansion. In fact I grew up with the Chiropractor that lived there when you did your "investigation" So pardon my being a smartass...but did you have his permission to be on his property? Ummmm no you didn't. Also, they have 5 kids and you were knocking on their door at 9:45 pm. thats just wrong!!! Come knock on my door at that time after I've put my kids to bed & I'm gonna answer, with my BIG dog at my side, my husband....and I'm sure he will be holding the baseball bat. If you are going to ghosthunt....then do it right! Get permission to be there and act respectful! Showing up on someone's property without approval is just not COOL...so don't do it!

Ok, just gotta put my 2 cents worth in.
I grew in up in Old and New South Haven. I lived there from the early 70's thru the mid 80's. As has already been said, The Wolf was a Bridal mall at the time. Every year, the local chapter of the Jaycees (which my parents were members of) held an Ocktober Fest there. The grounds were open to the public and my dance school was invited to perform.
As a child growing up in the area, I never heard the ghost stories and neither had any of my friends or family. We did how ever know the story of the grounds being a battle field and there myriad of underground tunnels leading to a few locations in the area. I have no first hand accounts of stange experiences but what I can tell you is we used to use the second floor rooms as our dressing rooms before we performed. My mother has told me several times she used to hear voices and there were cold spots on that floor.
This is a beautiful structure both inside and out. The hype over the mansion did really begin until after the bridal mall closed down. After the mall left, ownership changed hands several times. It was a shelter, a doctors office, 2 Chiropractors and a private residence twice which is what it is currently.
Yes it could be haunted, but more likely it's just residual energy from previous owners.

The house was very beautiful i remember before my mom and step dad bought the house my mom would drives us past it all the time and tell us how much she loved it and that we were going to live there when we moved in it needed alot of work the whole time we lived there was bascically spent fixing it up and by the time we moved it had sure come along way it was beautiful. My memories of that house are nothing but good ones and everytime i think of the wolf mansion it brings a smile to my face. Since we oved out i have not been back there always tell myself i will just havent.

i've been in the house as a boy when it was used as a bridal shop, i drove past it everyday and nigght for years (my best friend growing up lived in the haven) and my brother in-law bought a weight bench from an owner that lived there in '99, i had helped him move it. the house is beautiful. it has some of the same architects and builders that had built up ogden dunes, which if you know about the area history was frank lloyd wright inspired. don't know exact facts about Mr. Wolf being a murderer (don't think so), but definately suicidal. He hung himself in the belfry. leave him be, he will be there forever, and he will guide others to do the right thing. hopefully they kept the landmark erect forever. the pyramids, and stonehenge are still there, why would they take down wolf's mansion?

The Wolf Mansion is a harmless mansion. The bell tower, now actually has a chandelier in it as well as a telescope to gaze at the stars on beautiful nights. I live 30 sceonds *driving* by that house. Nothing strange has ever happened. The old age of it and the size is what makes people want to make stories from it. My parents hae lived in the same South Haven house for 26 years & they have never seen any strange activity. But I have always had good dreams about this place. It's just another story for this little town. I took this a couple years ago in the winter as I was driving past it.

IF I WAS A GHOST I WOULDNT BOTHER SHOWING MYSELF TO NON BELIVERS...WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY.

we used to sneak in there when we were kids. I know the girl that lived across the street. Anyway we were stupid punk kids who would sneak in and check it out. This house was mainly unoccupied at this time Im talking about. The Nipsco service was on. This was before the movie was filmed. They also had alot of dimmer style lights with round knobs. There were 2 kitchens one directly above the other. The "bell tower" was a look out tower and entry was gained by pushing 2 pieces of plywood skyward like a butterflies wings. Once you were in the look out tower, you could close the 2 plywood hinged floor doors. We found an old rocking chair in the closet closest to the tower. 3/4 of the way up the stairs to the tower, is this hidden closet. The basement was super creepy. It was all brick top, bottom and sides when we were there. There is atleast one tunnel way heading in the north direction in the basement. Ofcourse we didnt have the guts to go furhter than 5 ft only to get scared and turn back. This was before they concreted the tunnels. We tried to spend the night there one evening. Sometime around 1 or 2 am, we managed to scare ourselves enough that we left. I dont personally remember anything that would equate to ghosts, but not doubting it either. I am an adult now and dont condone this type of exploration, but it is the truth. If the right people read this, they will have an idea who wrote this as it was atleast out of our group. Very Interesting Home. We also found alot of ceramics in the garage loft which leads me to believe someone had a ceramic shop there at one time.

It's absolutely offensive and misinformed to write the owner killed his slaves! Pick up a history book, Indiana as a state and as a territory was always free. Neverever was slavery legal or allowed. It was forbidden legally and morally, remember the thousand of folks from Indiana who died ending slavery during the war between the states. Furthermore this house was complete in 1875 more then a decade after the civil war ended. As for the "unknown battle," what battles happened in Porter county? Maybe a battle debating if South Haven is in Valpo or Portage... I grew up driving by this house and loved it as a child. Very cool old house but slaves and no battles.

my group Paranormal alert has acctually done an investigation of wolf mansion. the owner had us do it during the day and nothing was really found. but as a psychic i did feel some heaviness in the basement near the old slavery tunnel from the undergroud railroad which has been sealed off for several years. I can neither deny or confirm haunting activities,i believe there may be some residual there. Could me more . the owner took the childrens tombstones from their burial place in the backyard and put them in one of the upstairs rooms.
