Hoosier National Forrest - Stepp Family Cemetery - The Lady in Black. This is one place that really deserves thought. I have heard many variations on whom the Lady in Black is, and why she is what she is. Mourning a dead husband, grieving over a son or daughter that was taken from this earth or watching over her baby that she could not protect, guilt ridden. The origin of the legend may have even started when she was alive, sitting on the heralded tree stump chair all night long in constant vigil, sobbing and running when people visit the cemetery or peeking in cars to see if it is her dead daughter returning. She eventually dies and is buried in Stepp cemetery and again, takes her place on her throne. Whether or not the cemetery was founded by two jealous brothers who killed each other over inheritance (which seems like a very hard task to accomplish, simultaneously killing each other) or the cemetery was founded by the Crabbites, a documented religious cult that reportedly included snake handling and sexual ceremonies as part of its ritual isn’t really an issue. The fact is many, many…hundreds of people have seen this phantom and the descriptions of her given from people that have witnessed her are strikingly similar. Law enforcement has been called to the forest to investigate what visitors explain as sobbing only to find nothing there. The Stepp cemetery is listed in almost every national and international journal and listings of haunted places. It has captured the attention of people of higher education. The Stepp cemetery ranks as one of the top paranormal spots, certainly in Indiana and maybe even worldwide.

Has anyone been to Stepp or Bridgewater Cemetaries lately? I have not heard much about either one of these "haunted" places in almost a year. Seems like people haven't done much ghost hunting in 09' all over America. Could it be the economy maybe thats keep people away?

Hi, I recently found this forum looking for more info on Draper Cabin. How do you get from the cabin to Stepp Cemetary? I'm staying there for a couple of nights, and I would like to make sure to visit the cemetary.
I've found one other old cemetary in Morgan Monroe SF, over by Cherry Lake, but this is the first time I've heard of Stepp.

I have been to stepps a lot we use to go camping there in the boyscouts it is very creepy if you go at night mainly because you have to walk threw the woods it is very thick and dark the trail is clear but you cant see anything of the trail when you get to it the moon is only shining threw in little spots and some of the graves are very hard to see. the legendary stump chair is no longer there not that I can find. there is a old grave in the east corner marked baby something and the rest off the graves are pretty old one is a statue type thing that looks kinda like a crown or hand not sure what it is but there is a candle in the middle pretty new candle though. you can see a red light coming threw the woods however that is a radio tower a few ridges away. I have had a few different experiences around there once in college we went out at night we saw a dogs head hanging from a tree it was pretty intense and has scared me to this day. a nother time in college we went out and a group of guys came out of the woods with candles and asked us all to turn our flashlights of we just got the hell outta there. Once in boyscouts while camping in morgan monroe we were plaaying flashlight tag and I was in the woods just scanning the area with my flashlight when I saw a man with long hair standing behind a tree looking at me he did not move or anything just stared at me I screamed with every once of energy I had and everyone came running the man ran away and We attempted to follow footprints but we had no luck. another time after going to stepps during the day in the rain we walked around a bit and then got into car to leave as we drove by campground we noticed what looked like a fireball just rise up and shoot across it was pretty big bigger than a basketball it was raining and no one was there camping it was weird. another time while camping we were playing with a ouija board we told the scout master to think of a question in his head then the board went to his birthdate no one knew his birthdate or that that was the question he was thinking he flipped out turned white and put the ouija board in the fire of all my experiences this one was freaky because of his reaction. I went again tonight but nothing happened I except I went to take a picture with my phone and it died. I do want to point out that if you google map it it looks like a pond directly behing the cemetery I just noticed it about five minutes ago has anyone hiked to it? It looks very creepy from the sky.

I forgot to mention today while we were leaving stepps we took the "old country" route out of Morgan Monroe right before you get out of park there is a bend with a abandoned house it is right next to the road we explored and it is weird it seems most of the stuff is still there spices and scoffe pot and such in the kitchen two kids rooms with kids cloths and toys shoes and pillows one with princess pillow case one with spider man pill bottles in the bathroom all the rooms have closets outside I found two tvs a boat and a chicken coop I also found a trail that goes right out the back to the creek behind the house and then up the ravine. it seems who ever lived there left in a hurry and kids have come in and ripped out most of it there is also a really suspicious sun symbol spray painted on the kitchen wall does anybody know what the story with this house is?
