If you guys really wanna know about the area... talk to some people around little egypt.. the woods that surround the place were tainted by a young girls rape and death... true story.. also the church at the end of the road is named shiloh... it use to be a satanic church... Do Not Mess around in the woods play in the cementary or the bridge but the woods to the west of them are very dangerous... there have been 4 reported accidental deaths and 2 unsolved homocides.. it is dangerous in those woods... alot of wolves and coyotes and junk.. Ya and another reason this cemetary got on the map is cuz of a girl that died of a heart attack. She brought a knife with her and she kept it hidden in the ground when she heard a noise... she tried to get up and inspect but she was getttin held back.. it scared the crap out of her so much that she passed out dead... it turns out when she put the knife in the ground she caught her shirt... so i'm not saying its dangerous in Little Egypt... just dont be stupid...

So I went to Little Egypt this weekend with the girlfriend it is a really creepy place we diden't get out there till around 10 and there was a full moon. When we first got to Little Egypt and some stoners were there. We kinda chased them off because honestly I just wanted some alone time with the gf we walked around and nothing creepy happened but we did not go through the graveyard. We were just sitting there parked for about 45 min. chilling and then all the sudden we hear some weird howling. I am a bit of an outdoorsman myself and in my years hunting since I have been 10 I am 19 now I have not heard a howl quite like it. It wasen't a wolf I have a wolf dog and the pitch was way off and it was not a coyote just kinda weird we got out of there when we heard that but it is a really creepy place. Anyone who wants to go should just use some common sense and you should be fine.

Why is it called little egypt? I have a friend that lives on 8b road close to little egypt on 5b road.... Even when you are not in the cemetery it is a creepy place to be. I myself have experienced phantom lights in the fields at 2 in the morning, strange noises and headlights coming out of nowhere.... and this is just in the area, not even in the cemetery. oh and what about the creepy mansion with the stone gate? if you go north on hawthrone and take the road around the curve to the left.... my friend has lived on 8b for about 13 years and said he has never seen anyone there coming in or out.... the lawn is always mowed... ? think i'm just a city kinda gal...

Ewald Cemetery. Many claims have been made of apparitions appearing at night at the cemetery. There have also been claims of driving around the cemetery and hand prints appearing on your windshield. One story is if you throw a nickel on a baby's tombstone, that you will hear it cry. If you go there you will get chased down by a phantom farmer that died in one of the fields around the graveyard. Down the street there is a woods. On certain nights you can hear what sounds like a girl screaming in the woods. Rumored Story: "Four years ago a 17 year old girls body was found there. She had been raped and killed." Little Egypt is located on 5A Road and Hawthorn in Marshall County. 5A road goes around the cemetery in a square style.

But first of all, where did the name "Little Egypt" come from? The section of Illinois located in the southern tip of the state has long been known as Little Egypt and several of the towns there bear names associated with the Egypt of old: Boaz, Karnak, Carmi, Thebes, Karnak, Herod and of course, Cairo. According to tradition , the people in the central part of Illinois gave the region this name when they were were forced to travel to southern Illinois for grain, after a series of droughts and bad winters destroyed their own. The settlers in the wagon trains were compared to the ancient Israelites traveling to Egypt to buy grain in the Bible. The name may have actually come into use before that, but nevertheless, this anecdote probably helped it to become a permanent name for the region. The area known as Egypt lies just south of the counties which extend across the state from East St. Louis to Vincennes, Indiana and it differs greatly in comparison to the rest of the state. The prairie of the north gives way to rolling hills that eventually become the foothills of the Ozarks.
As time has gone by, Little Egypt has greatly changed and gone are many of the old ways of the past. In some places, however, little has changed. Deep in the Ozark hills, the customs, traditions and tales of the past are not yet forgotten. They live on in the voices of the storytellers and in the hearts of the folklorists and the historians. The first location deals with the Old Slave House or Hickory Hill, near Equality. This house marks perhaps the most tragic, and the most haunted, place in Little Egypt. The Old Slave House is filled with stories of ghosts, violence and horror unlike any other place in Illinois... or even perhaps America. It is unique to the haunted history of southern Illinois.

"June 2008 Update - Warning: The local residents do not appreciate investigators. And will chase you with their shotguns."
