Marengo
The Carl Smith House - From the moment you see this place you know its haunted! Lights turn off & on, ghostly sounds can be heard and people say that the house itself is some sort of a portal. Several people have died in this place making it one of Indiana 's haunted places.
Can anyone help me out on this one?

I searched this for days and never found it. I wrote a bed and breakfast in Marengo under the guise that I wanted to see the Carl Smith House while I stayed in their Inn and they wrote back that they know nothing about it or its location. Heh, they blew that sale. Let me know if you find it, alright? Thanks, Scott aka scruddud

Yeah I'll be sure to let you know, but I doubt I'll find it myself. Apparently no one has ever investigated that house before on the web, and for all I know it could've been made up or torn down by now.

Yeah. That's the only bad thing about haunted places like that.
With buildings you never know for sure if they are even still there or the last time they were investigated or anything.
For the longest time I had searched for this haunted house in Valpo because it was only a few blocks from me. And everytime I would drive down the road to look for the house I could never find it. I could never get a clear direction as to where it was (an address or anything) and it was hard to even look because most of the driveways on this road are those long as heck ones that are like mini-roads.
I have since heard that they have torn the house down. Which makes me really upset because I wanted to go so badly.
But I hope you find this house and I hope it's the real deal.

Thanks for the incouragement, I hope I find it as well. Next time I check out the shoe tree I might drive around the area a bit to ask some of the younger guys or high school kids if they have ever heard of the place.

Thanks, I would very much appreciate that. Now that I think about it, there is a house in the area I saw that was creepy as hell. I just didn't think about it until now because it looks like it's on the lot of a junkyard and like it's about to fall down.

I contacted the Crawford county historian. And she said that the Carl smith house was next to the post office in marengo and it burnt down last year. the property is up for sale. I was disappointed to hear that. I would have liked to investigated that place. There are several old spooky homes in and around marengo. one that i am trying to get permission to go to is a place called the proctor house it was built in the early 1800's. it is a two story brick home. there is a cemetery back behind the house witch is the proctor cemetery. it is currently owned by the historical society. If any body knows anything about this place please let me know. Thanks IGT Member Steve.....

d**n, that stinks to hear that it burned down. I was really looking forward to checking that place out one day, but maybe I'll check out the property anyway. Generally it seems that most property owned by the historical societies are much easier to gain access to than typical private property.
Another place worthy of mentioning near Marengo that goes unlisted is The Shoe Tree/Devil's Hollow Road. Figures walking the sides of the road have been spotted, and the area just has an overall creepy vibe.
