I lived in the trailer park Oak Tree Village for about 10 years.
Oak Tree Village is off of Old Porter road, and is on the border between Burns Harbor, Chesterton and Portage (It was always interesting trying to give directions to people. They'd be like So you live in Chesterton? No...Portage. We had a Portage Address, but Chesterton schools. Kinda like how it is here in South Haven. Wheeler number, Valpo address, Portage schools.....but anyway...).
Anyway, I had never heard of this road being haunted before (I had recently found this out when I first started visiting here), and I have had a few odd experiences.
At night, I would always go for walks or me and a few people would hang out at the creek (Salt Creek). And no matter if you were in a group or by yourself, if you went by Old Porter, or would just be in the vicinity (SP?) of it, you would fell like you were being watched.
One night, I was out for a walk. I had to get out of the house for a while and clear my head (We were packing up, because we were moving within a month), and I had to get out. I had my headphones on, and I decided to walk by Old Porter, then head down to the creek.
I walked down the road that lead to the tacks, and got the oddest feeling. The woods over there were creepy enough, but at the time the last two trailer's were not being occupied, so I was basically alone. I decided that I wasn't going to walk down the road that leads to the tracks, so I was just gonna head down to the creek.
I walked down the hill, totally lost in my own world. And got down to the creek. I threw a few rocks in, and started to walk back up the road....and that was when I heard it. I heard the most horrible sound in the world.
My cd had just ended and I was about to push play again when I heard what sounded like a whole pack of dogs howling and barking. I kid you not. They sounded pretty far away, but I was not about to stick around to find out.
I ran all the way back up the hill, and ran to the office where I sat down and caught my breath. I had been in such a hurry that I didn't even bother to turn my headphones back on. The dog noises stopped as soon as I had got to the top of the hill, and I didn't stop until I got to the office. I caught my breath, and went back home.
I had went back out there one last time all alone before we moved, and I have been out there a few times with some friends, but I have never heard the dogs again.
And it was so wierd. It seems that the creek, which has Old Porter going right over it, is where it's the creepiest. It's where you feel like you're being watched the most. There are all sorts of woods out there, so it wouldn't surprise me if there really is something out there. I do know that there are a few people who have dogs in the surrounding area, but there's no way that any dog could make the noises I heard.
Another time when I was little, there was a dead baby pig found dead down at the creek too.
So, if anyone decides to check this one out, I would definatly go down to the creek. The easiest way to get to the creek is to go into the trailer park, and go down to the park. That's where the dead pig was found as well as where I heard the noises and that is where you feel like you're being watched. But do be cautious going here. Sometimes the residents will call the police if they think you're up to trouble, so make your visit kinda short.
