The Chrysler Group has put Tipton County, Ind., back on the jobs menu, reports Automotive News. A transmission plant that was built but never used will supposedly be put into use, as Chrysler has asked for tax incentives from Indiana state and nearby authorities, notes the Kokomo Tribune. Further details of Chrysler's request have not been introduced to the press at the moment. Will you be in the market to purchase or sell a new or used van? If this portrays you, do yourself a favor and take a look at Gus Johnson cars.
Chrysler looking for 'potential economic development incentives
Indiana and Chrysler Group are working together, such as cities Tipton and Kokomo, to get more information. This will hopefully lead to a future investment with possible economic rewards.
With the implementation of more than $1.3 billion in previously announced investments to produce the next generation of front- and rear-wheel drive transmissions, Kokomo remains at the center of the company's powertrain offensive. We will continue to look for ways to improve our operations and our products to meet the new fuel economy standards and the needs of our customers,†notes a Chrysler LLC press release.
Partnership previously
The plant was going to be done in a joint venture with Chrysler LLC and Getrag Corp., a German parts supplier. Getrag did not give financing, which led to a suit from Chrysler. There was Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection sought in 2008, and the whole deal crumbled. The 781,500-square-foot transmission plant in Kokomo was no longer prepared as a partnership at that point.
Abound Solar Inc. bought the plan to produce solar panels after the Chrysler/Getrag collaboration fell through. The facility was bought by real estate developer W.W. Reynolds for $25 million after foreign competition led to Abound giving up. The property was then listed for $39.5 million by the company.
Brand new plans are not entirely clear, but insiders suggest that since Chrysler just began producing its first vehicle with dual dry clutch transmission - the 2013 Dodge Dart - the Kokomo facility may be pressed into service along those lines. Located in Tipton County half an hour south of Chrysler's Kokomo transmission complex, the $530 million facility set on 106 acres was made to accommodate 1,200 workers in dual-clutch transmission production.
Looking at Chrysler
Chrysler is well-known for its transmissions, such as the Chrysler 8-speed, rear-wheel drive automatic transmissions and the 9-speed 4WD automatic for smaller vehicles. The Kokomo plant will only help Chrysler’s image and sales success because of the additional transmission technology.
