Hello everyone,
First post here. A little about myself....
I've never seen a ghost or anything close. I don't know what to think...I'm a must see kind of guy. But, I do love a good spook story...Love being scared. I'd like to think this stuff is real but I think until I see something for myself (Please feel free to tell me how to do it!!) I'll remain skeptical.
I thought I would give you all a report on a few things I've checked-out in my area of Indiana (I live in the Warsaw area and work in the Plymouth area). I'll leave some links to places that you may or may not be familiar with...I'll also copy and paste pertinant information...
I live on Big Barbee Lake. Sawmill Lake is part of our "Chain of Lakes" (It's hooked to the lake I live on)...
Barbee Hotel Bar & Grill
Hotel/Motel/Inn
3620 M. Barbee Road
Warsaw, IN 46580
For a map to the Barbee Hotel, go to MapQuest.com and punch in the above information.
What it says about The Barbee Hotel...
Barbee Lake - The Barbee Hotel - The Barbee Hotel was considered a very high-class resort during Al Capone's time. He stayed in the hotel frequently, often clearing out all the guests so he could stay in seclusion. He always stayed in room 301 at the back of the hotel. When cleaning the rooms employees have smelled cigar smoke and when investigated it is coming from room 301. The bartender who has worked there for years has seen an old man sitting at one of the booths on several occasions. When she goes to get someone, he is gone. People have reported hearing footsteps on the stairs, and in the halls above the dining area. Many parties when taking their picture will line up on the stairs. There are several pictures on the wall where you can see orbs of light in the background behind the group. Many other celebrities stayed there as well. Rita Hayworth was said to go and stay in her room for days at a time. When you drive by the area of the hotel she stayed in late at night sometimes you can see a faint light.
I don't really trust this informatioin too much. It's got most of it right, but it was not Rita Hayworth that stayed there, it was Carol Lombar (As stated above from The Hotel's website). Plus, I've never heard of these ghost stories. But who knows...Maybe I've just missed-out. I'll be sure to ask about them the next time I'm there.
Sawmill Lake: (Don't get confused, Sawmill Lake is attached to Big Barbee Lake but it's in a different town)...
What it says about Sawmill Lake...
Leesburg - Sawmill lake - Old white house around the point. Several odd vapors and apparitions seen. Strange noises heard constantly. Sometimes you can hear an adult male yelling, like he is very mad. A local legend ghost named "Whitey" A commonly seen ghost around this house. A drunk driver crashed into the house about 30 years ago and died.
I don't know what I think about this either...Only because I've never heard of it. Plus, as you may be able to tell from the map, there's not a lot of places for a drunk driver to run into a house and die. But anything is possible, I guess. And I have no idea where "Around the point is". I've been on this lake a lot at night. And in the area a lot. I'll see what I can find out about this story and post updates sometime...
Now onto the COOL stuff!!
Troll Bridge and (Located outside of Bremen and Plymouth)...
What it says about it all...
Bremen - Plymouth - Troll Bridge - This bridge is right down the road from Little Egypt. If you go and park your car or just park a little off the bridge and you get out there is a tall dark thing about 7-8 ft tall. It will either try to throw things at you or chase after you. WARNING: Do NOT go out here, stay off this bridge, this thing is not good and you will be terrified. I strongly suggest the un-stable mind stay out of here too, unless you are up for psychological damage.
Bremen - Plymouth - Little Egypt - Many claims have been made of apparitions appearing at night at the cemetery. There have also been claims of driving around the cemetery and hand prints appearing on your windshield. One story is if you throw a nickel on a baby's tombstone, that you will hear it cry. Little Egypt is located on 5A Road and Hawthorn in Marshall County. 5A road goes around the cemetery in a square style.
Bremen - Plymauth - Little Egypt Graveyard - Supposedly if you go there you will get chased down by a phantom farmer that died in one of the fields around the graveyard. Down the street there is a woods. On certain nights rumors of what sounds like a girl screaming in the woods. Also, depending on how far back you go, on you way out, you will see a set of headlights following you out of the cemetery. It appears that they have just come out of the woods. They will follow you until you are completely out, and a ways down the road.
I found this information about the "Little Egypt Cemetery" from the Marshall County website...
#35 - Ewald / Little Egypt Cemetery Sec. 8, T 34 N, R 3 E; earliest stone 1852; heavily vandalized due to isolated location; on maps of 1880, 1908 & 1922; 5th Road jogs around south end of cemetery, a short distance E of Hawthorn.
For a map to the area go to MapQuest.com and punch in "Hawthorn Road" and "Bremen, IN".
My thoughts on the The Little Egypt Cemetary...(I went there and to Troll Bridge at lunch today)...
The description of it above is not exactly right....5th Road jogs around the NORTH side of it and not the south side. Plus, 5th Road does NOT "Go around it in a square as stated above...It jogs around it. And it is NOT "5a Road", it's just 5th Road.
There are no woods close to it. So, I don't know how you are supposed to drive far back into the woods in order to see the headlights following you out or hear the little girl screaming. The nearest block of trees is about a 1/4 of a mile east on 5th Road...On the way to "Troll Bridge".
I suppose the cemetary could be a bit spooky at night. Any cemetary can be. The whole thing is fenced-off pretty good but you could jump it pretty easy. The odd thing is, I saw one headstone that showed a person dying in 1850 and it looked brand new (maybe 20 years old, who knows?) I suppose this could be a replacement due to all the vandalism. There were others that looked pretty new too. One cool thing is, I saw an American Flag on one of the headstones. I don't think anybody has been burried there since the early 1900's??? Maybe that was put there by some Veteran's Club...That's pretty cool.
Also, there is a farm house just north of the cemetery on Hawthorn Road about a 1/4 mile...About where the star on the map is. And it's got a really good view of the cemetery...I've got to believe if there is anything happening there, those people would see it.
Here is a link to all the people who are burried there: www.rootsweb.com/~inmarsha/1/cemew.htm
Now for "Troll Bridge". THIS PLACE LOOKS PROMISING!!!
Again...The stories above aren't totally correct. Troll Bridge is about 1 1/4 mile East from Little Egypt Cemetery. I didn't go far enough when I first looked for it. I had to go back and go further down 5th Road to find it. Also of note is the fact that 5th Road is a dirt road...That's ALWAYS good for spooky stuff!!! Unfortunately, there is a house up the road within clear view of the bridge which probably takes away from the "Scary Factor" a bit. It's about a 1/4 of a mile East of Troll Bridge. And it's not any kind of old bridge or anything...It's really nothing more than a overpass with side rails. And it's got junk dumped all over the place (I'll be THAT makes the Troll MAD!!). Plus there is a lot of grafitti on the side rails. Looks like it's a pretty popular place for the kids to hang-out and drink, maybe??
But it IS pretty cool! It's about 20 or 30 feet over the "River" (It's really just a creek). So, it's fairly high for a dirt road overpass. And it's got a good spooky tree sitting close to it (Probably where the Troll jumps out from!!). And the best thing is.....About 30 feet past the bridge on the south side of the road is a little lane leading, what looks to be, back into the woods and eventually to the river bank (I didn't want to go down the lane because it was a bit muddy and I was driving my company car).
Maybe that lane is the one where you're supposed to see the car "Following you out of the Little Egypt Cemetery" But that's just my guess....And remember...There is NO woods around the Little Egypt Cemetery, so that story had to originate from someplace???
I could see this place being VERY spooky at night. Plus, there are plenty of places to hide in order to play a trick on someone. I would like to walk that path at night. The woods and the river have GOT to make a lot of spooky noises when you're there.
Well...That's my report...
I think the Barbee Hotel being haunted is a bit of a stretch...Although it could be haunted inside and I've just never heard these stories. I've been by there plenty of times at night and have never had any weird feelings. I'm not too sure about Sawmill Lake either...I just don't know where they're talking about. Little Egypt Cemetary could be haunted for all I know. Troll Bridge holds some promise. The woods close by makes it scary looking. But a 7-8 foot brown thing that throws stuff at you? That seems to be a bit much.
Of all the places I have listed, I would like to go to Troll Bridge at night to see how spooky it is.
